MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary's will welcome a top-ranked recruit in the fall as Jocelyn Massey from Las Cruces, New Mexico has committed to play for the Gaels. Massey brings an impressive prep resume to Moraga and an even more interesting story about her upbringing.
Massey is a four-star recruit and the No. 2 recruit out of New Mexico. Recently, she was rated No. 93 in the country according to TennisRecruiting.net and No. 25 out of the Southwest.
"Jocelyn's work ethic completely embodies what it means to be a Gael," said assistant coach Jamie Haas. "Her story is so different than most which makes her such a unique player. Her background has molded her into the great person she is today and we are so excited for her to be joining our Gael family!"
Massey was born and raised on her family's farm in Animas, New Mexico - a city with a population just north of 200. When she was 10, she moved to Las Cruces approximately two hours away and was the only tennis player in the city.
To practice, Massey would use a ball machine or rally with her mother who played for New Mexico State. Any tournament she would play in required at least a four to five hour drive.
In addition to the obstacles in her tennis career, Massey continued to help tend to the family farm back in Animas. A typical day consists of a two-hour drive out to the farm, helping early in the morning before running errands, going to school, practicing with her ball machine, and then back to helping feed the farm animals. Each weekend consisted of 10-hour days working on the farm.
Massey credits her strong work ethic and teamwork skills to her family upbringing on the farm along with her three sisters. Not only was she a standout on the tennis court, she was also a varsity volleyball player in high school.
Saint Mary's returns to action in the fall. The Gaels were 7-4 this season before the remaining matches were canceled due to COVID-19.
