BSB | Gaels Erupt for 11-5 Midweek Win over Nevada
4/21/2026 8:48:00 PM | Baseball
RENO, Nev. - The Saint Mary's baseball team shook off a quiet offensive weekend against Gonzaga and exploded for 11 runs on 16 hits to defeat Nevada 11-5 and sweep the regular season series over the Wolf Pack.
Seven different players had two hits in the ballgame including a two-hit and three RBI performance from center fielder Tanner Griffith. Sophomore catcher Brett Williams also made his 14th start behind the dish and had two hits and a pair of RBI to contribute to the Gaels' six-run victory.
After going down two runs in the opening frame, Saint Mary's (23-17) erupted for seven runs in the second inning off six hits. The Gaels would take the lead and never look back, scoring a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to contribute to their 12th double-digit scoring game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
True freshman Jake Nobles made his fourth start of the 2026 season and despite giving up two runs in the first, he bounced back for a 1-2-3 second inning to put himself in line for the win in a designated bullpen game. Ian Armstrong took the day off from behind the plate and was the team's designated hitter for the afternoon. Armstrong wore a pitch to lead off the second and then Saint Mary's strung together three straight hits to tie the game at two. Later in the frame, the Gaels got extra base hits from Tanner Griffith and Makoa Sniffen, a double and triple respectively, to push their lead to 6-2. Armstrong would come to the plate for the second time in the frame and single to cap off a 7-run second inning for Saint Mary's.
Diego Castellanos extended his current hit streak to 17 games and had an RBI single in the fourth to give the Gaels an 8-3 lead. Three more runs would come across in the top of the fifth off five hits including four straight to start the inning and force a mound visit for the Wolf Pack. Griffith would single home Jared Mettam to give Saint Mary's a commanding 11-4 lead.
Redshirt freshman David Roberts made his 13th appearance of the season and pitched 2.1 innings following Nobles. First year Gael Luis Martin Romero finished the fifth inning before freshman Cooper Berger and Diego Emerling concluded the game with two innings each. Berger made just his second appearance of the season and worked around two hits to record a pair of scoreless frames while Emerling allowed just one baserunner in two scoreless and hitless frames of his own.
Saint Mary's ended its three-game skid and completed the regular season sweep of Nevada, extending its win streak over the Wolf Pack to four games dating back to the 2024 season.
